Face on Mars
The classic “Face on Mars” photo taken by Viking I in 1976 is actually an optical illusion. The formation, made of rock, was shadowed such that it resembled a human face. Newer photos show the rock formation to be quite unremarkable. The photo, however, quickly became a tabloid phenomenon.
